BURLINGTON, ON, Feb 21, 2012 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) –
HearAtLast Holdings Inc. (pinksheets:HRAL) is pleased to announce
the release of the HR3000 hearing aid, the first in a series of
products available exclusively at HearAtLast clinics as well as at
affiliates. The product is developed in Canada, where quality and
performance are never compromised, by Vitasound Canada. It features
the finest technology available today and we feel it is at the
pinnacle as far as hearing aids are concerned. The featured patented
technology is the Neuro-Compensator which was developed by Vitasound.

Hearing aids have come a long way since the trumpet. Current hearing
aids amplify sounds and are not ideal; they don’t give the wearer
back their hearing, and they just give some sound which might give
the brain enough useful information to help decode incoming sounds.

A new type of hearing aid has now been developed by Vitasound. The
Neuro-Compensator aid works in a different way. It has a microchip
which transmits electrical signals to the brain, resulting in a more
natural and complex sound signal. The Neuro-Compensator is based on
the cochlear implant model, mapping the damaged areas of the ear and
compensating for them alone.

In the development of the HR3000 HearAtLast has worked closely with
Vitasound to have our marquis product stand above the rest. “Having
our own customized products enables us to offer premium product at an
attractive price. Price has always been one of the major obstacles in
the purchase of a hearing aid. The new product comes with a full 2
year warranty. We are currently working on other customized features
in the product line and retail appearance of our clinics that will
enhance our presence in this market. We are very excited about being
able to offer such a unique and distinguished product,” stated
Matthew Sacco, CEO of HearAtLast Holdings Inc. For a full description
of the Neuro-Compensator technology please visit our web site today

Like The Jesus And Mary Chain before it, Sleigh Bells arrived with 2010’s Treats riding a one-trick pony—a pony the size of a tank. The band’s pairing of tinnitus guitars and sugared vocals was an effective team-up, and fresh and credible enough to win its hip jock jams—singer Alexis Krauss wears a Chicago Bulls jersey at shows—an audience that wouldn’t otherwise be caught dead in the same borough as a stadium. Reign Of Terror takes a step back from Treats’ sheer assault, dialing down the red-lining guitar volume to vintage Metallica levels and leaving more room for Krauss’ crystalline cooing.

In a promising new direction, “End Of The Line” nods to the shattered Cyndi Lauper nightmares of bands such as Crystal Castles, a warped ’80s pop sound that re-emerges in the softer moments of “You Lost Me” and “D.O.A.” The New York Times recently covered Derek Miller’s family tragedies, and the album’s ostensibly a darker affair. “I know it’s hard but / you gotta deal with it,” Krauss sings on “Comeback Kid,” but the lyrics don’t get much deeper than that. That’s not to question their earnestness, just the narrative: Ever the cipher, Krauss rarely delivers enough story within her repetitive verses to make them stick over the rhythmic bombast. Even when her words are reduced to syllables, though, she’s a charismatic presence, giving a melancholic tint to “Leader Of The Pack” and appearing both frantic and dream-like on “Comeback Kid.”

However, without its shocking abrasion, the band’s take on ironic metal feels tiresome. “True Shred Guitar,” which features an Axl Rose-like call-out (“On your knees! On your knees!”) could do with more actual shredding. On “Born To Lose” and “Crush,” Miller plays so few chords, it’s as if he’s stepping back after each strum to admire them.

The band’s underground success is in large part a commentary on the power of appearance: There’s a thin line separating “Demons,” with its chugging power chords and lyrics on tearing an enemy down “brick by brick,” from the virtuosic, rebellious anthems of current acts such as Paramore, but only one of those bands gets called for a Coachella slot. On Reign Of Terror, Sleigh Bells is cornered in by its own sound, unwilling to risk more adventurous metal excursions or get vulnerable enough to fully embrace its emerging lighter side.

Professor Henry Pau (right) is an ear, nose and throat specialist at Leicester Royal Infirmary and the Nuffield Hospital in Leicester.

He said: “Tinnitus is peculiar in that only the patient can hear the noise and it can be so distressing for them.

“There is no cure but there is a lot of psychological support and techniques which can teach people how to cope.”

It is estimated about one in 10 people in Leicestershire has permanent tinnitus.

Prof Pau said: “It is difficult to give an exact number of people who suffer from tinnitus because most don’t come to us but are seen by their GP.

“The cause is still not properly understood but one theory is the inner ear can be damaged in people who work in a noisy environment.

“Once the tiny hairs on the cochlea (a small cavity in the ear) are damaged they don’t regenerate and the sound patients hear is the ear firing spontaneously to noise and transmitting the signal to the brain, but there isn’t any noise.”

Some suffer central tinnitus where they hear the noise in the middle of their head.

Prof Pau said: “In these cases stress, emotional or physical, does seem to a factor.”

He said in rare cases the hearing nerve might have a benign tumour, but if surgery was used to remove the tumour it did not cure the tinnitus.

Prof Pau added: “There is lots of research going on into how it can be treated, but I haven’t seen any evidence it works.”

The estimated the cost came to $ 3,554.

Before going any further, Williams consulted with Eva Rey, the executive director of the Lakewood Ranch Inter-District Authority, who was familiar with the system from a prior job.

“We received real positive feedback from the residents who utilized the system,” Rey said. “It really changed their meeting experience and they could participate so much easier.”

To help pay for the costs, Williams applied for a 50/50 grant from the Hearing Loss Association of America to help install the sensors, and he volunteered to pay the remaining balance.

Williams views this as a necessity, not just for those who frequent town hall, but also for himself.

Years ago, he too fell victim to hearing loss.

According to the Hearing Loss Association of America, about 17 percent of adults in the U.S. report some degree of hearing loss and by age 65, one out of three people will develop hearing loss. Sixty percent of the people with hearing loss are either in the work force or in educational settings.

“I was a city attorney for 40 years and I had sudden hearing loss in the late ‘90s,” Williams said.

A hearing impaired person sitting in the audience, or on the dais, like Williams, can have trouble picking up the conversation they most want to hear among other the other sounds in the room.

Williams had so much difficulty with his hearing that he retired earlier than he wanted to from the active practice.”

In early December of 2011, Williams had surgery to have an Envoy Esteem hearing aid implanted into his skull. He’s still adjusting.

“I have to learn to hear again,” he said.

Williams is a member of the Hearing Loss Association of Sarasota and is the newsletter editor. He has since attended several facilities that are now looped and wanted Lakewood Ranch’s Town Hall to join the list.

“This is a facility center that serves the community,” he said.

Nick Williams, East Manatee reporter, can be reached at (941) 748-0411 ext. 7049. Tweet: @_1NickWilliams.

State law allows for Minnesota residents to purchase hearing aids from a provider of their choice.

Minnesota statute requires people to be notified when a hearing aid is recommended that they may purchase the instruments from a certified dispenser of their choice. The instruments need not be from the same person that recommended the products. An insurance company or a Workers Compensation administrator cannot require that people receive hearing care from a specific individual or business entity. A second opinion can be sought.

People have a right to a copy of their hearing test regardless of whether they paid for the test, according to the Commission of Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing Minnesotans. Minnesota law requires that people be given a copy of their hearing test upon request. This hearing test is used to determine the amount of amplification needed to overcome hearing loss.

People have the right to be referred to an audiologist of their choice for a hearing evaluation. People may go outside their clinic system. Insurance carriers may have different reimbursement rates based on where a hearing test is given. An official referral form may be needed to be seen by an audiologist outside of a managed care network. However, people have a choice on who evaluates their hearing.

There is a requirement that a hearing aid provider must give you a consumer rights brochure from the Minnesota Department of Health if hearing aids are discussed. This brochure spells out rights as a consumer and gives tips regarding the process of getting hearing aids. To find out more, contact the Consumer Information Center of the Department of Health at 1-800-657-3837.

People have a right to return hearing aids within 45 days of the date of purchase for a refund, according to the Minnesota Department of Health. The request for a refund must be in writing. The dispenser may keep $ 250 of the total purchase price as a nonrefundable fee. Purchases of hearing aids involving the dispenser coming to a home are also subject to a three-day right of cancellation for a full refund. These rights must be printed on a purchase agreement which the consumer and the dispenser sign at the time of sale.

Financial assistance is available to assist people in obtaining hearing aids. The Medicaid and MinnesotaCare programs have hearing aid coverage, which offer sliding fee programs that defray the cost of hearing aids for clients that financially qualify. Also, there are service organizations and other groups that may provide financial assistance.

For more information, contact the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services Division of the Minnesota Department of Human Services at www.dhhsd.org.

An estimated 36 million Americans experience a chronic phantom sound in their ears, known as tinnitus.

The sound is perceived either in the head or in the ears in the absence of any external source of sound. The tone or ringing may last only 10 to 20 seconds, but for the majority of people, it is constant.

Many people adjust to the constant sensation of tinnitus, and it is not bothersome to them. However, 2 to 5 percent of people who have tinnitus find it extremely distressing and bothersome. When severe, tinnitus can lead to problems with sleep, concentration, anxiety, depression and disability.

Tinnitus is much more common as people get older because the two most common causes of tinnitus are age-related hearing loss and noise damage to ears. Hearing loss develops because of the accumulated noise exposure that occurs over the course of a lifetime combined with the aging process.

	What are the symptoms?

Many people describe their tinnitus as sounding like crickets or locusts on a summer night. Some say it sounds like a tone or ringing. Others report it as a buzz, hum or roaring sound.

For many people, hearing loss can cause tinnitus. Something more serious like a growth on the hearing and balance nerve or an infection in the ear can also cause tinnitus symptoms. Whenever anyone has new tinnitus or a sound that continues to persist for longer than an hour at a time, an ear, nose and throat doctor can determine if the cause is an ear disease that can be treated.

	What causes tinnitus?

The Auditory Research Group at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine is conducting research on tinnitus. We think it comes from damage to the inner ear, which then triggers changes within the auditory pathways of the brain.

Our research has shown that hearing loss, as well as tinnitus, can lead to changes within the nerves and the brain chemicals, or neurotransmitters, of the brain. If these altered pathways or chemicals can be better understood, we can develop treatments designed to reverse these changes. Even if we can’t reverse hearing loss, we might be able to alleviate some of the symptoms associated with it, such as tinnitus.

	How is tinnitus treated?

A good evaluation by an ear nose and throat doctor and a complete hearing exam are both very important to establish that the tinnitus is a result of aging or noise-induced hearing loss. Hearing aids are very beneficial for tinnitus. Hearing loss causes the brain to work harder to process sounds; this ‘brain strain’ increases the volume of the tinnitus loudness. Hearing aids stimulate the auditory pathway, mask out the tinnitus and trick the brain into turning down the volume of the tinnitus.

If hearing aids are not an option, tinnitus retraining therapy uses both sound therapy and a form of information counseling. Medications may improve tinnitus symptoms for some people, but no drug treatment works for a certain population of people all the time. Herbal supplements, magnet therapy or laser therapy have not been shown to relieve the loudness or annoyance of tinnitus.

What can be done to help prevent tinnitus?

Tinnitus is the result of damaged or loss of function of the microphones of the inner ear, so protecting those microphones is very important. Noise-induced hearing loss is one of the most preventable forms of hearing loss and, therefore, a way to prevent tinnitus. Noise exposure accumulates over the course of your lifetime.

Use ear protection when you will be exposed to noise, especially loud sounds of 90 decibels or higher, such as a power saw or a very loud lawn mower. Using these tools hour after hour, week after week and summer after summer damages the microphones of our ear over time. Even though we might be doing all that lawn mowing when we’re in our 20s and 30s, the hearing loss starts to show up when we’re in our 40s and 50s. That’s when the tinnitus becomes more noticeable.
