BLOOMINGTON, MN–(Marketwire – May 15, 2012) – http://www.gnresound.com — ReSound, a technology leader in hearing aid solutions, has donated hearing aids to the Oxygen series, “Tanisha Gets Married.”

Clive Muir, the fiancé of reality TV star, Tanisha Thomas, has a hearing impairment that has worsened over the last five years. The docu-series follows Clive to the audiologist’s office, where he is assessed and fitted with ReSound hearing aids.

“Oxygen contacted us and asked us if we would be willing to donate hearing instruments and fitting services to the show,” said Kevin Mensink, VP of Marketing, ReSound. “Having ReSound hearing aids featured on Oxygen is great exposure for our brand. It’s important that the public is aware that hearing loss does occur in young people and that hearing instruments are simple, practical solutions that can completely transform a person’s quality of life.”

ReSound partnered with its customer, Family Hearing Center in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, to assess Clive’s hearing and fit him with the best hearing aids for his condition. Audiologist Joanne Rosenberg selected ReSound Alera 9 RIE hearing aids.

“When ReSound approached me and asked if I would like to be involved, I was very excited by the prospect,” said Joanne Rosenberg, audiologist at Family Hearing Center. “Clive visited my clinic with the Oxygen crew and filmed the entire hearing assessment and fitting process.”

“Tanisha Gets Married” airs on Mondays at 10 PM ET/PT on Oxygen. For more information, visit http://tanisha-gets-married.oxygen.com/

BLOOMINGTON — Here are the top 10 things that Deborah Pitcher wants people to know about hearing:

Have children evaluated

Pediatric hearing loss merits a full audiological evaluation and treatment plan. Good hearing is critical for speech, language and educational development.

Sudden loss needs attention

A significant, sudden (within two days) decline in hearing should be addressed immediately. If an infection is responsible, medicine may be prescribed. Untreated hearing loss could become permanent.

Most hearing loss is gradual

Hearing loss related to noise exposure usually occurs over years. By the time a person notices hearing difficulties, much of the damage is done.

Ear plugs have improved

Excuses to not wear ear plugs because of comfort or sound quality are no longer relevant. There are more than 100 styles of ear plugs, including plugs specially made for musicians, shooters, machine operators and children.

Give ears a break

The intensity and duration of exposure to noise — from iPods, concerts, motorcycles, car races, etc. — are what causes hearing loss. Taking breaks from noise can rest the ears.

Use it or lose it

If you experience hearing loss, get evaluated for a hearing aid. The longer the hearing system is “down,” the harder it is to get up and going.

Don’t live with ringing

If you experience tinnitus (ringing in the ears), an audiologist with tinnitus experience may offer solutions.

You get what you pay for

Free offers may not be the best route for persons with hearing loss. Patients should be sure that their hearing health care is being administered by an audiologist. In Illinois, audiologists must be licensed and have either a doctoral or master’s degree in audiology.

Aids are better

Today’s hearing aids — which range from $ 1,000 to $ 3,000 — are digital, computer programmable and discreet in size. Many interface with cell phones and televisions via Bluetooth technology. Some are waterproof. Others operate with rechargeable batteries that can last for more than a year.

Appreciate hearing

Like most things of value, we don’t appreciate our hearing until it’s diminished. Hearing connects us to family, friends and environment and alerts us to emergencies. Preserving it and restoring it is important.

Online communities for a variety of special interest groups, including the hearing impaired, exist to help connect like-minded individuals. The site is planning to add and online store in the near future.

The site was founded in 2008 with the goal of helping the hearing impaired community interact socially and find hearing health information. The site also maintains a listing for audiologists, schools for the deaf and hard of hearing, and financial resources (coming soon).

They are a mother and daughter who consider each other best friends. And yet, Bernadette and her 14-year-old daughter, Taylor, who asked that “20/20″ not reveal their last names, don’t eat meals together, don’t share any activities and don’t even speak to each other. It’s all because everyday sounds Bernadette makes — clearing her throat or sighing — can send Taylor to the brink.

“It’s like an almost undescribable amount of anger and, like, rage that I just can’t control,” Taylor told “20/20.”

Taylor suffers from misophonia, a mysterious condition whose name literally means “hatred of sound.” Misophonia makes it difficult to tolerate everyday noises such as chewing, coughing, even breathing. And while many might say they get annoyed at such sounds, for those with misophonia, the consequences of hearing such “trigger” noises are far worse than mere irritation: violence, isolation, depression and even thoughts of suicide.

Watch the full story on “20/20″ Friday at 10 p.m. ET.

Taylor has attempted suicide three times — attempts, she said, that were triggered by anti-depressants that did nothing to help her misophonia.

“I don’t want her to give up, ’cause she’s tried to give up,” said Taylor’s sister, Alex. “I just want her to keep moving.”

Taylor’s symptoms began when she was 8 years old.

“I coughed, and she covered her ears, and she ran away,” Bernadette said.

Eventually, it grew much worse.

“She’s hit my head against the wall. She’s kicked me. She’s pushed me,” Bernadette said, “just whatever she can [do] to stop the sound from coming from me. ”

Once the rages pass, Bernadette said Taylor immediately feels remorse for her behavior. But the teen told “20/20″ that when in the grips of such a rage triggered by an offending sound, that “sound will replay in my mind until I get the anger out … until I somehow get out all my frustration.”

Do You Have Misophonia? See the Symptoms

Audiologist Marsha Johnson of the Oregon Tinnitus and Hyperacusis Treatment Center is one of the only experts who treats misophonia patients. Johnson said the cause of misophonia is suspected to be a “neurological glitch in a very low level of the brain.”

For people with misophonia, certain noises, she said, trigger a reaction similar to what others might experience when stung by a bee.

“You have to get that away from you, right now,” she said. “It’s very intense.”

But not everyone’s reactions are as devastating as Taylor’s. Kelly Ripa, host of the talk show “Live With Kelly,” announced last year that she believes she has misophonia.

“As early as I can remember, certain sounds of eating would bother me,” she told “20/20.”

At the dinner table with her husband and children, the sounds of chomping, slurping or even swallowing is enough to almost set Ripa off.

“My gut reaction is to yell, but I control that,” she said.

Still, she added, “if my husband eats a peach, I have to leave the room.”

Bernadette and Taylor find themselves in separate rooms most of the time. When they are face to face, they communicate by passing notes or with a form of charades … but even that doesn’t last long. During one recent “conversation,” the sound of Bernadette swallowing was enough to prompt Taylor to ask her mother to leave.

Taylor’s condition hasn’t just affected her relationship with her mother; it’s upended her whole life. Unable to tolerate sounds like chewing, coughing and sniffling, she had to leave her friends at school and began attending an alternative school with limited hours. And then there were the suicide attempts; the most recent one happened in January.

“She’s the sweetest girl that you’ll ever meet. The kindest,” Bernadette said. “And the saddest part is her crying out to me, saying, ‘Mommy, what’s happening to me? What is this?’”

In recent weeks, celebrities from the world of popular music have spoken out about the obvious, but often ignored, link between loud music and hearing problems. Chris Martin (Coldplay) and Plan B (handsome) have spoken about their problems with tinnitus; a constant, high pitched drone that can develop if the ear has been damaged by over-exposure to loud sounds.

This, and a host of other ear problems, are a problem in the classical music world. In my own practice, if I have repeatedly practised a particularly high, loud passage, I am conscious of discomfort in my ears – and that is nothing to do with dodgy intonation or screechy strings, thank you very much. I am often very thankful not to be a piccolo player when in a practice room. If there can be discomfort with just one person playing, how much worse can it be with multiple musicians playing?

When we rehearse music of a particularly bombastic nature, for example a Mahler or Bruckner symphony, or something very contemporary with an abundance of loud, jarring dissonances, I often feel that the silence on leaving the studio is very loud. Sometimes, I get a slight ringing in my ears, but thankfully for me, this is not a continuous sensation.

When I was young, my parents, quite rightly, were continually telling me to turn the volume down in my headphones. Alas, in work it is impossible to do that and you can’t walk away from the noise in the way that you can move away from speakers at a gig or festival.

As musicians, our livelihood is somewhat dependent on our ability to hear satisfactorily and, therefore, we have to do what we can to minimise the damage inflicted on our hearing. This is often a compromise and involves a fair bit of trial and error.

On stage you frequently see little perspex screens behind various players’ heads. These screens are supposed to protect the player from the sound levels coming from behind them, but often have the adverse effect of simply throwing that noise back to the colleague from which it is emitting, therefore placing their hearing at greater risk also. We have been experimenting with screens of different shapes and materials in work, but I don’t know if there has been a conclusion reached yet. We’re continuing to work with the orchestra’s management to try and find a solution that works for everyone.

In the BBC National Orchestra of Wales we all have fancy-pants earplugs created from moulds of our ears, but I personally still do not find them particularly comfortable. I’m trying to persevere with them. Earplugs can sometimes make it difficult to hear either yourself, or the delicate nuances called for, and I personally hate feeling that I’m not catching all the details I should. However, better that than burgeoning hearing problems, I guess.

February saw British Tinnitus Awareness Week and now, Action on Hearing Loss‘ Loud Music Campaign aims to raise awareness about hearing health. Perhaps it is time for all of us to really start thinking about the health of our ears.

The orchestra presents an afternoon of Brahms, Mozart and Hindemith tonight (Wednesday 16 May) from 2pm, at BBC Hoddinott Hall in Cardiff Bay. For more information and tickets, call 0800 052 1812.

Healthy Hearing is passionate about your hearing health – and about the content we post on our site. That’s why we personally screen every clinic review our readers submit and hand-type them into the website.

Each review is thoroughly examined before it is posted on the website. In order to protect patient privacy, we identify the author of the review by their first name and the first initial of their last name. The city and state are listed beneath the review, but never with a street address or phone number.

We also correct any spelling and grammar errors, edit out any sensitive personal information and remove content or information that isn’t directly related to the experience received at the clinic.

In an effort to provide our readers with fair and accurate information, we delete obscenities, derogatory or discriminatory content and misleading information. We check each review to make sure the content is original and not copied from another source. Reviews that are promotional in nature – and clearly designed to promote a specific business or product — also are disregarded.

According to Businessweek, 70% of individuals consult reviews before making a decision on a product or service.

Individuals can submit reviews three ways and each method is monitored differently. Reviews received over the telephone are verified by a group of screeners.

Those received online are checked for relevant content in order to eliminate spam. Reviews received by mail typically originate from Healthy Hearing postcards the patient picks up at the clinic.

Those are reviewed for accuracy and grammar, then typed into the Healthy Hearing website by hand.

According to a recent survey conducted by the National Research Corporation, one in two Americans use online sources to research healthcare providers. These reviews provide unbiased opinions from like-minded individuals about the services and medical treatment they received.

Healthy Hearing’s thorough efforts are entirely designed to provide you with the best, unbiased clinic information possible so you can make an educated decision on which clinic to trust with your hearing health.

Here are a few tips for readers who are interested in writing reviews of their own:
• Write about your own experiences. If you haven’t visited the clinic, please don’t relate stories from others who have.
• Be accurate. Write factually and without exaggeration.
• Give specifics. Tell us what you liked as well as what you didn’t like. Provide as many details as you can about your experience.
• Write from the reader’s perspective. If you were looking for an ear health provider, what would you like to know about this clinic and their staff?

The Healthy Hearing website contains information on more than 4700 hearing clinics throughout the United States. Readers have submitted more than 1,000 reviews on their experiences at these clinics, with more arriving every day from readers just like you.

The next time you hear a buzzing noise in your ear, do not ignore it.

Commonly called tinnitus, this a condition when a person can hear sounds in his ear, when no sounds are being produced outside. This can be due to several causes — simple ear wax to a possible brain tumour.

What is tinnitus?

This is a high-pitched whining, electric buzzing, hissing, humming or whistling noise. It can also be a ticking, clicking, roaring, beeping or sizzling sound. Tinnitus can be intermittent or continuous. The sound perceived may range from a quiet background noise to one that can be heard over loud external sounds.

What causes tinnitus?

Tinnitus can be caused by a variety of reasons. Of late, there are several factors in the external environment which can cause damage to the inner ear. Excessive use of headphones, listening to music loudly, sudden acoustic shock (bomb blast or a cracker burst) are some of the common causes of this unnerving sound in the ear. There could be an underlying health issue that has been ignored, which may cause tinnitus.

External ear infections, fluid retention in the ear because of a cold, age-related hearing loss, acoustic neuroma (a tumour that may have grown on the auditory nerve), Menier’s disease (causes giddiness), mercury or lead poisoning, multiple sclerosis, head injuries, thyroid deficiency, anaemia, psychiatric disorders (depression and anxiety), tumour in the middle ear and excessive use of medications.

The most common tumour that can cause tinnitus is an acoustic neuroma of the hearing nerve. If this is detected early, before any complications set in, it can be cured completely with surgery. Tinnitus is a subjective disorder. The symptoms can be detected by ear examination, pure tone audiometry (detects the type and extent of hearing loss), routine blood tests to detect anaemia and MRI of the brain and temporal bones to rule out tumours.

Depending on what the cause is, tinnitus can be treated. Usually, ENT specialists recommend use of drugs, surgery or injections at the localised point. However, tinnitus can be a permanent condition if there is severe damage caused to the inner ear. Prolonged exposure to sound levels as low as 70db can result in tinnitus.

This is one condition that can be consciously avoided. Musicians and DJs must use special ear plugs, headphones to protect their ears. Those who work at zones which involve loud noises (construction sites, factories, etc) must use ear plugs.

Do not talk on the mobile phone for long stretches. Those who have to receive or make calls regularly, as part of their job, must take frequent breaks.
